ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS TRANSFERS NEED TO KNOW

Millions of dollars in scholarships go unclaimed each year According to FluidReview. com, $100 million in schol- arships went unclaimed in the Unit- ed States in 2015—enough to cover tuition for 14,000 students! Many people don’t bother to apply for schol- arships because they think they have no chance to win, they don’t con- sider a smaller prize to be worth the effort (false—see fact #4), or they do apply but they aren’t eligible. Side note: that’s one of the only

t’s a fact: scholarships are hugely important for college students. Unlike a student loan, a schol- arship is free money you don’t have to pay back later. After you

search, apply, and win, scholarships can be applied to your tuition or oth- er expenses at your new school, and voilà—your college transfer is now more affordable! Well, it’s not that simple. There are a lot of rules surrounding scholarships, caveats you need to know, and other things that can make your scholarship search easier and more successful. Let’s go over 10 of those right now.

Every student can apply for scholarships

There are scholarships out there for almost everyone: middle and high schoolers,

undergrads, transfers, grad students, and beyond! Each scholarship will lay out who is eligible in its require- ments, whether it’s by age, education level, or another category. There are also transfer-specific scholarships, in- cluding the Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship Program, Phi Theta Kappa awards, and institutional aid espe- cially for transfer students. Be sure to inquire about the scholarship oppor- tunities available at your college(s) of interest. Your GPA doesn’t have to be per- fect to win scholarships either. While many are based on academics, there are also a ton of scholarships that have nothing to do with grades. Merit-based awards are available for talent and in- terest in art, music, theater, athletics, community service, leadership, group membership, and more. Almost any

times you should pass up on apply- ing for a scholarship—don’t waste your time filling out an application if you’re going to be disqualified right away. But if you’re eligible as stated in the scholarship rules, you might as well give it a shot. You could be pleasantly surprised with the result.

hunt for them! And a lot of awards won’t be heavily advertised, espe- cially local ones. To find these hid- den gems, ask your old high school counselor for a list of local schol- arship opportunities—businesses, places of worship, and service groups usually love to give back to the com- munity in this way. A parent’s workplace might have a scholarship program for children of employees, or maybe they be- long to an organization that distrib- utes funds to students every year. Your college(s) of interest may have scholarships that aren’t listed on- line too, so be sure to ask if there are more available. Leave no stone unturned during your search, and apply for every opportunity you’re eligible for, big or small. Speaking of which…
